East Java Overland Tour Packages — Multi-Day Banyuwangi, Ijen, Tumpak Sewu & Bromo

An east java overland tour is a multi-day, point‑to‑point road trip that links East Java’s volcanoes, waterfalls, turtle beaches and savanna in one continuous private itinerary. From Bali, that usually means crossing by Ketapang ferry into Banyuwangi, then looping through Kawah Ijen, Bromo, Tumpak Sewu, Sukamade and Baluran over 3–5 days with a dedicated driver and local guides.

This page is your planning and booking hub for multi day east java overland tours run by Banyuwangi Tours, the East Java nature‑tour planning desk of Bali Premium Trip (founded 2015 in Kuta). We design and sell private banyuwangi overland tour packages that start or end in Bali, Surabaya or Malang, then arrange guides, permits, 4x4s and transfers through licensed, vetted local operators we work with regularly.

We are logisticians first. My role is to make sure the plan on paper survives contact with ferry schedules, mountain weather, Java’s traffic and your flight times.

How our East Java overland tours work

Banyuwangi Tours focuses on multi day Banyuwangi overland tours that connect these core areas:

  • Kawah Ijen (blue fire and sulphur crater lake)
  • Mount Bromo (active caldera and sunrise viewpoints)
  • Tumpak Sewu & Goa Tetes (tiered waterfall amphitheatre)
  • Sukamade turtle beach (turtle nesting and release, within Meru Betiri NP)
  • Baluran savanna (wildlife viewing in “Little Africa of Java”)
  • Pulau Merah (surf beach and sunset, near Banyuwangi)

We build private itineraries only. No fixed‑date group departures, no seat‑in‑coach buses.

What we arrange — and what we don’t own

Bali Premium Trip is a Bali‑based concierge and tour operator. For East Java we:

  • Plan your east java overland tour itinerary in detail
  • Book private drivers and vehicles (from MPV up to 15‑seat minibuses)
  • Arrange licensed local guides, porters and mandatory park rangers
  • Secure park entry tickets and special permits where needed (e.g. Kawah Ijen, Baluran, Meru Betiri, Bromo, Sukamade turtle program)
  • Reserve 4×4 jeeps for Bromo sunrise and Baluran savanna drives
  • Book hand‑picked homestays, mid‑range hotels and higher‑end lodges
  • Coordinate the Ketapang ferry crossing between Bali and Java

We do not own national park concessions, jeeps or government permits. Those are held by local operators and park authorities; we arrange them on your behalf at official or published rates. You still book and pay your overall package directly to our Bali Premium Trip reservations team — there is no extra layer adding a hidden markup.

Core routes: 3, 4 and 5‑day East Java overland tour options

Think in days and driving time first. East Java looks compact on the map; on the road, it is not.

As a rule of thumb:

  • Bali (South Bali or Ubud) to Banyuwangi via the Ketapang ferry: 7–9 hours total, including ferry (45–60 minutes) and road transfers
  • Banyuwangi to Bromo area (Cemoro Lawang / Sukapura): 6–7 hours
  • Banyuwangi to Tumpak Sewu (via Lumajang): 5–6 hours
  • Tumpak Sewu to Bromo: 4–5 hours
  • Banyuwangi to Sukamade (via Pesanggaran & Rajegwesi): 5–6 hours including off‑road
  • Banyuwangi to Baluran: 1.5–2 hours

Below are the most requested multi day East Java overland tours we build and customize.

3D/2N packages — “Hit the highlights”

Good for: Travellers short on time who want 1–2 big experiences, not the entire loop.

Typical 3‑day options:

  1. Bromo Ijen Tumpak Sewu 3 day tour

Route (from Surabaya or Malang):

  • Day 1: Drive to Tumpak Sewu – waterfall hike – overnight near Lumajang
  • Day 2: Early drive to Bromo – sunrise viewpoint by jeep – sea of sand – continue to Banyuwangi
  • Day 3: Ijen crater trek (optional blue fire if open) – transfer to Bali or fly out from Banyuwangi

From Bali this becomes very compressed and usually needs a late‑afternoon Bali arrival on Day 0 or a very late finish on Day 3.

  1. Banyuwangi 3 day tour package (Ijen, Baluran, Pulau Merah)

Route (from Bali):

  • Day 1: Bali pickup – ferry to Java – Baluran savanna drive – overnight in Banyuwangi
  • Day 2: Ijen crater hike – rest – sunset and dinner at Pulau Merah
  • Day 3: Free time / coffee village visit – ferry back to Bali or onward Java transfer

This is the most balanced short banyuwangi overland tour package. Not too much driving, enough nature, workable for families and 50+ travellers.

4D/3N packages — “Volcanoes + waterfall or turtles”

Four days allows you to link two major areas without running the schedule to the edge.

Sample east java 4 day tour package: Bromo, Ijen & Tumpak Sewu (from Bali or Surabaya)

  • Day 1
  • Start Bali early (05:00–06:00) or Surabaya morning
  • Transfer to Bromo area, check‑in, rest
  • Day 2
  • Bromo sunrise by jeep – crater rim walk – breakfast
  • Drive to Tumpak Sewu area (Lumajang / Pronojiwo), overnight
  • Day 3
  • Tumpak Sewu waterfall trek and Goa Tetes (if conditions and fitness allow)
  • Long drive to Banyuwangi (5–6 hours), arrive evening
  • Day 4
  • Ijen crater hike (start ~00:30–02:00 if blue fire access is open; later if not)
  • Return for late breakfast, shower, ferry to Bali or drop at Banyuwangi airport

Alternative: swap Tumpak Sewu for a lighter day in Baluran or a coffee plantation if you prefer less demanding hiking.

5D/4N packages — “Do it all in one loop”

If you want to connect Tumpak Sewu, Sukamade turtle beach, Baluran savanna, Pulau Merah and Kawah Ijen, you are realistically looking at a banyuwangi tour 5 days 4 nights or longer. Adding Bromo needs either very long days or extra nights.

Example: 5D/4N Sukamade – Baluran – Ijen from Bali (Sukamade Baluran Ijen tour package)

  • Day 1 – Bali to Banyuwangi
  • Early pickup in South Bali / Ubud
  • Drive to Gilimanuk, cross Ketapang ferry to Java
  • Lunch in Banyuwangi, short break
  • Afternoon transfer to the coast near Pulau Merah or Pesanggaran, overnight
  • Day 2 – Sukamade turtle beach (Meru Betiri NP)
  • Off‑road drive via plantations and forest to Sukamade (4–5 hours from Pesanggaran)
  • Check into simple guesthouse (government or licensed village lodge; basic rooms, fan, shared or simple private bathroom)
  • Dinner, short briefing with ranger
  • Night walk to watch turtles nesting with park rangers (conditions dependant; not guaranteed)
  • Day 3 – Turtle release & back to Banyuwangi
  • Early morning baby turtle release program if available
  • Return by 4×4 to Pesanggaran / Pulau Merah
  • Lunch & beach time at Pulau Merah
  • Continue to Banyuwangi town, overnight hotel
  • Day 4 – Baluran National Park
  • Morning drive to Baluran (1.5–2 hours)
  • Savannah drive and short walks with local ranger: deer, buffalo, monkeys, birdlife; if you are patient and lucky, possible distant views of banteng
  • Picnic or simple lunch, optional Bama beach stop
  • Return to Banyuwangi in the afternoon, rest
  • Day 5 – Kawah Ijen & return to Bali
  • Midnight or early‑morning start for Ijen hike
  • Crater rim viewpoints, sunrise and crater‑lake panorama
  • Descent, breakfast, ferry back to Bali, drop in South Bali / Ubud

This route is heavy on off‑road and simple accommodations for one night (Sukamade), and lighter on intense hiking compared with Tumpak Sewu.

Example: 5D/4N “Grand Loop” from Bali: Banyuwangi Ijen Baluran Tumpak Sewu tour package

  • Day 1: Bali – Baluran – Banyuwangi
  • Day 2: Ijen hike – long transfer toward Tumpak Sewu
  • Day 3: Tumpak Sewu trek – continue toward Bromo area
  • Day 4: Bromo sunrise – transfer to Probolinggo / Surabaya / Malang
  • Day 5: Buffer / city day / onward flight

This is the tightest version we recommend for a multi day East Java overland tour that includes four major nature sites without Sukamade. With Sukamade plus Bromo plus Tumpak Sewu in a single loop, we strongly advise 6–7 days.

Quick comparison: 3, 4 and 5‑day packages

Package length Typical route Best for Indicative private price range* (per person)
3D/2N Ijen + Baluran / Ijen + Bromo / Bromo + Tumpak Sewu Short trips, strong hikers, tight schedules US$280–650 (2–6 guests)
4D/3N Bromo – Ijen – Tumpak Sewu or Ijen – Baluran – Sukamade Most travellers, mix of hiking and wildlife US$420–980 (2–6 guests)
5D/4N Ijen – Baluran – Sukamade – Pulau Merah ± Bromo/Tumpak Sewu “Do it all” loops from Bali, families US$650–1,450 (2–6 guests)

*Indicative only, last verified June 2026. Depends on group size, season, accommodation tier and start/end points. Ask us for an exact quote.

These ranges assume private vehicle, licensed local guides, basic to mid‑range accommodation and required park/permit fees. Solo travellers pay more; groups of 4–8 share costs better.

What’s included in our Banyuwangi overland tour packages

All our banyuwangi overland tour booking options follow the same structure. We then adjust details to your comfort level and route.

Always included

  • Private AC vehicle with driver throughout Java (and Bali if starting/ending there)
  • Fuel, tolls and parking
  • Licensed local guide in each key location (Ijen, Bromo, Tumpak Sewu, Baluran, Sukamade)
  • National park entry fees and main permits for listed activities, as required at time of travel
  • 4×4 jeeps for Bromo sunrise, Baluran savanna and Sukamade off‑road segments where needed
  • Standard accommodations (guesthouses, homestays, 2–3* hotels) with private room and bathroom, except at Sukamade where facilities are simpler
  • Breakfasts on all full days; some packages also include simple dinners in remote areas (Sukamade, Bromo village)
  • Ferry tickets between Bali (Gilimanuk) and Java (Ketapang) for you and your driver/vehicle

Common exclusions

We keep these separate so you control the spend:

  • Lunches and most dinners (except where only one local option exists)
  • Personal hiking gear (shoes, headlamp, rain jacket, trekking poles)
  • Gas masks for Ijen (we can arrange rental on site)
  • Optional activities not in the agreed itinerary
  • Travel insurance and medical costs
  • Tips for local guides and drivers

If you prefer one fully bundled number, we can fold meals and gear rental in. Just state that clearly at the briefing stage.

Comfort levels: budget, mid‑range and higher‑end options

We don’t over‑promise on hotel style in rural East Java. Outside Banyuwangi, Malang and Surabaya, choice is limited.

Budget tier

  • Simple guesthouses or village homestays
  • Fan or standard AC, basic bedding, clean but plain bathrooms
  • Often in the village closest to the site (e.g. near Ijen trailhead)

Works best for hikers and younger travellers who prioritise location over facilities.

Mid‑range tier

  • 2–3* hotels and comfortable local guesthouses
  • AC rooms, hot water, private bathrooms, Wi‑Fi where available
  • In Banyuwangi, this can include decent city hotels or small resorts

This is the default for most banyuwangi overland tour packages we sell.

Higher‑end options

  • Selected boutique resorts / 3–4* properties in Banyuwangi, near Ijen foothills, or beach areas around Pulau Merah
  • Better bedding, design and food; often with pools and gardens

Note: In Tumpak Sewu and Sukamade areas, options remain simple across all “tiers”. You can enjoy a nicer stay before and after those segments in Banyuwangi or Malang.

Indicative per‑night upgrade costs vs basic guesthouse: US$20–80 per room (last checked June 2026), depending on property and season.

Route logic: starting in Bali vs Surabaya vs Malang

You can start your east java overland tour from:

  • Bali (South Bali / Ubud / north coast)
  • Banyuwangi (train, plane or ferry arrival)
  • Surabaya (airport / city)
  • Malang (city / airport)

From Bali

Most common for travellers already in Bali who want to add East Java.

Pros:

  • Simple: one team handles your whole trip from Bali hotel door to Java and back
  • Easy access to Banyuwangi, Ijen, Baluran, Sukamade, Pulau Merah
  • Choice to drop off in Surabaya or Malang instead of returning to Bali

Cons:

  • Long first and last days because of road + ferry (up to 9 hours door‑to‑door)
  • Early starts to fit Ijen or Baluran and return ferries

From Surabaya or Malang

Best if you’re flying in specifically to do Bromo and Tumpak Sewu.

  • Common 4–5D loop: Surabaya → Bromo → Tumpak Sewu → Ijen → exit via Banyuwangi to Bali
  • Or reverse: Bali → Banyuwangi → Ijen → Tumpak Sewu → Bromo → Surabaya

We’ll map your flight times, then set the route so you are not doing Ijen plus a long airport run on the same day unless you insist.

Site‑by‑site: what each place actually involves

Kawah Ijen (Ijen Crater & Blue Fire)

  • Elevation: ~2,386 m
  • Hike distance: ~3 km one way, 600 m elevation gain
  • Typical hiking time: 1.5–2.5 hours up, 1–1.5 hours down

Key points:

  • Blue fire access is not guaranteed. Indonesian authorities open and close the crater‑rim‑to‑lake path depending on gas levels, recent incidents and policy. Sometimes they allow visits only to the rim, not down to the lakeside.
  • Gas levels can shift rapidly. We always follow ranger instructions; if they say turn back, we turn back.
  • You must have: closed shoes, headlamp, warm layers and a mask. We strongly recommend a proper respirator; basic cloth masks are not enough near sulphur fumes.

We schedule Ijen either:

  • As a midnight/early‑hours hike to reach blue fire (if open) and sunrise, or
  • As a later pre‑dawn or morning hike to avoid the crowds and some of the cold

Mount Bromo

  • Sunrise viewpoints usually at 2,700–2,800 m around Penanjakan / King Kong Hill
  • Standard Bromo route: 4×4 jeep from village to sunrise point, then down across the sea of sand to the base of Bromo, then short walk or horse ride and steps to the crater rim

Consider:

  • Very early wake‑ups (often around 02:30–03:00)
  • Cold, windy conditions; in dry season you will also have dust
  • Crowds in peak times; we choose viewpoints that balance views and density based on your preferences

We do not run off‑road jeeps ourselves. We book licensed Bromo jeep operators who hold local access rights and know the terrain.

Tumpak Sewu & Goa Tetes

  • Drive time from Banyuwangi: 5–6 hours
  • Trail: very steep, often wet and slippery descent via bamboo ladders, mud and rocks
  • Physical demand: high. Not suited for small children, knee problems, mobility issues or if you dislike exposure heights.

There are two ways to see Tumpak Sewu:

  1. Upper viewpoint only – short walk, minimal risk, good for photos if you’re not fit for the descent.
  2. Full descent + river walk to Goa Tetes – 3–4 hours round‑trip, demanding but rewarding for strong hikers.

We only use local guides who understand the current trail condition; after heavy rain, we may advise skipping the descent.

Sukamade turtle beach (Meru Betiri NP)

  • Access: last 20–25 km on rough dirt track and river crossings (4×4 essential)
  • Facilities: simple government or village lodges, shared power, limited phone signal, basic meals

Highlights:

  • Night‑time search with rangers for nesting sea turtles (mostly green turtles, occasionally other species)
  • Early‑morning hatchling release when available and permitted

Reality check:

  • Turtle sightings are not guaranteed on any given night, even in peak season.
  • You may spend hours waiting quietly on the beach.
  • Conditions are simple: think cold‑water showers, basic mattresses, limited electricity.

If your primary focus is comfort, we usually recommend a Sukamade visit only if you genuinely care about the experience and accept the rough edges.

Baluran National Park

  • Landscape: savanna, low forest, coastal mangroves and beach
  • Drive time from Banyuwangi: 1.5–2 hours to main gate

Typical program:

  • Morning drive across savanna with stops for wildlife viewing
  • Short walks to look for birds and primates (macaques, langurs)
  • Optional visit to Bama Beach for mangroves and quiet shoreline

Baluran works well as a low‑stress day in a multi day Banyuwangi overland tour, especially for families.

Pulau Merah

  • Distance from Banyuwangi town: ~70 km, about 2–2.5 hours by car
  • Character: Surf beach with a small hill island, sunset views, local warungs and homestays

We normally use Pulau Merah as:

  • A relaxed half‑day for swimming, surfing lessons or sunset
  • A stopover before/after Sukamade to break up the off‑road section

Pricing: what drives the numbers

We do not publish one rigid price because costs vary meaningfully. Instead, we share transparent ranges and tell you what changes what.

Key factors

  1. Group size
  • 2 travellers: vehicle and guide costs are split two ways
  • 4–6 travellers: best value per person
  • 7+ travellers: require larger vehicles or more jeeps, which shifts the math
  1. Season
  • High season (roughly July–August, late December–early January) = higher hotel rates and tighter availability
  • Shoulder months (April–June, September–November outside major holidays) = best balance of price and conditions
  • Rainy season (roughly December–March) may affect road access, trail safety and wildlife viewing
  1. Accommodation tier
  • Basic vs higher‑end in Banyuwangi or Bromo areas can swing total trip cost by US$30–100 per room per night
  1. Route complexity
  • Adding Sukamade, Tumpak Sewu or both increases jeep time, off‑road, and guide days
  • Open‑jaw routes (e.g. Bali → Java → Surabaya) usually cost slightly more than simple return loops, but can save you time and domestic flight costs

Indicative package ranges (per person, private, last verified June 2026)

  • 3D/2N Ijen + Baluran from Bali, 2 people, mid‑range hotels: ~US$350–550
  • 4D/3N Bromo – Tumpak Sewu – Ijen from Surabaya to Bali, 2–4 people: ~US$480–900
  • 5D/4N Sukamade – Baluran – Ijen from Bali, 2–4 people: ~US$700–1,250

Larger groups (6–10 guests) can sometimes bring 10–25% savings per person depending on vehicle type and hotel configuration.

If you share your dates, group size and comfort level, we will send a precise, itemised offer from our Bali Premium Trip desk at transparent, all‑in pricing.

Safety, permits and realistic expectations

We are candid about what we can and cannot control.

Safety approach

  • We follow park authority instructions first, not guest pressure. If a site is closed or access is restricted, we respect that and reorganise your schedule.
  • Our guides are licensed locally for the parks they work in and are used to the specific trails.
  • We do regular briefings about terrain, footwear, weather and lighting for Tumpak Sewu and Ijen.

We can adapt itineraries for:

  • Families with younger children (shorter hikes, more Baluran, less Tumpak Sewu)
  • 50+ travellers with moderate fitness (upper viewpoints, more vehicle‑based viewing)
  • Strong hikers who want more demanding days (full Tumpak Sewu descent, longer rim walks)

Permits and park capacity limits

Indonesian parks are steadily tightening rules around visitor numbers and time windows. At Ijen and Bromo especially, last‑minute changes occur.

We:

  • Book official tickets and permits through park systems and registered local operators as early as allowed
  • Build in flexibility where possible (e.g. having Baluran or a village visit as a fallback if weather closes Ijen on a particular morning)

Because we do not own park concessions, we cannot override closures, extend access hours, or guarantee a particular viewpoint. No one can.

Weather and wildlife

  • We do not guarantee clear sunrises at Bromo or Ijen, or turtle sightings at Sukamade.
  • Dry season (roughly May–October) tends to have better visibility for Ijen/Bromo and easier access to Tumpak Sewu and Sukamade.
  • Rainy months can still be very rewarding but sometimes require last‑minute safety‑based changes to the plan.

How to choose the right East Java overland tour itinerary

Use this as a quick filter:

Have 3 days total from Bali?
Focus on Ijen + Baluran + Pulau Merah or Ijen alone. Avoid trying to push Bromo and Tumpak Sewu into 3 days from Bali; it usually becomes more transfer than experience.
Have 4 days and want volcanoes?
Do a Bromo – Tumpak Sewu – Ijen line, starting in Surabaya or ending in Bali. Or choose Ijen – Baluran – Sukamade from Bali if your priority is turtles and wildlife.
Have 5 days or more and want “everything”?
Plan a loop that starts in Bali, covers Ijen, Baluran, Sukamade, Pulau Merah and either Tumpak Sewu or Bromo, then ends in Surabaya or back in Bali. For both Bromo and Tumpak Sewu plus Sukamade, go 6–7 days.
Prefer lighter hiking?
Skip Tumpak Sewu, focus on upper viewpoints, Baluran drives and village visits. Ijen rim only (no night descent) is still very rewarding.
Want as much hiking as possible?
Plan pre‑dawn Ijen, full Tumpak Sewu descent + Goa Tetes, and longer Bromo rim walks. Tell us clearly so we can pick the right guides for you.

If you share your dates, group size, fitness level and must‑see sites, we can sketch two or three multi day East Java overland tours and compare them side‑by‑side.

FAQs

How many days do I really need for an East Java overland tour from Bali?

From Bali, 3 days works for Ijen plus one lighter destination like Baluran or Pulau Merah. For Ijen plus Bromo or Tumpak Sewu, 4 days is the realistic minimum, and 5–6 days is better if you want to add Sukamade turtle beach and keep driving days reasonable.

Can I see Bromo, Ijen, Tumpak Sewu and Sukamade in one trip?

Yes, but not comfortably in 3–4 days. To link all four in a single loop, plan at least 6–7 days with some long transfers. We typically start in Bali or Surabaya, then arrange a one‑way route that finishes in Banyuwangi or another city so you are not backtracking too much.

Is the Ijen blue fire always open?

No. Access to the blue fire viewpoint near the crater lake is controlled by park authorities and can close without much notice due to gas levels or safety incidents. Sometimes only the crater rim is open, sometimes the entire area closes. We monitor current rules, but no operator can guarantee blue fire access on a specific date.

Is Sukamade turtle beach suitable for children?

It can be, for families who are comfortable with basic facilities and long, bumpy drives. The night turtle program involves quiet waiting and walking on the beach with rangers, usually after children’s normal bedtime, so we discuss this carefully with parents and sometimes suggest a shorter Banyuwangi itinerary with Baluran and Ijen instead.

How far in advance should I book a Banyuwangi overland tour?

For high season (July–August and late December), 2–3 months ahead is sensible, especially if you want specific hotels or a complex route with Sukamade and Tumpak Sewu. For other months, 3–4 weeks is often enough, although last‑minute trips are still possible if you are flexible on accommodation and exact timings.
