Ijen is a safety page before it is a travel page
The Ijen crater emits sulphur dioxide continuously and is closed by the authorities without warning when concentrations rise or when volcanic activity increases. That is the single most important fact for a visitor and it belongs above the photographs. Our Ijen pages therefore lead with the current access status, the mask requirement, and the fact that the blue-flame window depends on being on the rim in darkness, which constrains the departure time far more than most itineraries admit.
Where park information comes from
Access status, entry tariffs and opening arrangements for Ijen, Alas Purwo, Meru Betiri and Baluran come from the managing park authority and the volcanology agency that issues alert levels, not from tour listings. Each figure carries the date we last checked it. Where an alert level has changed and we have not yet confirmed how the park is applying it, the page says so.
